Mid 2006 Self Portrait

Whilst digging through backups of old stuff I came upon this. Thought it worth posting for comedy value.

Zebras; Major retouch and edit.

Here is a 'Before and After' example of treatment to an image I took while on holiday in early 2006.

Unfinished Portrait

He's one I started ages ago... unfortunatly I no longer have the layered file, so can't really do much with this. It's a portrait of an old friend, but this will always stay as a WIP (work in progress).

Old illo

There was a time I always wore Adidas SuperStar (mk1). I lived and died in 'em... here's a very old illo (2002/03 I think). Originally hand drawn, scanned and layed out in PS.

recent illo

BucketHead rocks! famous mainly for his brief stint with the new Guns n' Roses. Illo was done for a magazine feature about Buckethead. Done in a combo of Illustrator and Photoshop.

Some fun with Stock images

Generally I create my work from scratch, and tend to use my own photography. However, sometimes when trying to acchieve certain commercial/advertising looks it becomes impratical... so Stock images come in useful.

Emulating the Hi End Jewelley look. Image from iStock.

Composite of 6 images from various sources. Heavily reworked
lighting and colour balancing/compositing.

Just for fun really... Catalog cover sorta look.

Pseudo HDR

Here's a shot from a recent trip to Portugal. Unfortunatly The original was fairly over exposed, so it was reworked in PS to give a moodier atmosphere. The original view was a little surreal, as it was a 'graveyard' for tuna fising boat anchors.

The original shot was heavily reworked to give a pseudo HDR
look, plus much debris was digitally removed from the sand.

Some HDR experimentation

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is interesting. It can be pain in the ass to shoot, but can give some
great results.

Shot in a park very close to where I live. Composite of 3 shots at ±2 exposure
brackets. Reworked in photoshop to give mosre aesthetically pleasing results.

Some Archived Illustrations (Pt.2)

Some more old illo's from various dates (2004 onwards).

Fanzine illo of Ola Frenning, lead Guitarist of Soilwork, a
really great Swedish Death Metal band. Illo done in 2004, just
after getting a Wacom Tablet.

Another Fanzine illo, this time of Alexi Laiho, Lead Guitarist
and Vocalist for Finnish metal band Children of Bodom. Also
done in '04.

No prizes for guessing who the subject is. This was an early
personal wacom experiment. It attempts top reference the
disposable fashion that is musical taste... Done in 2005 when
'Nu-Metal' was hot, and therefore doomed to be a fashion trend.

Another Wacom experiment. This was to do with colouring on a
limited colour pallet. I chose Batman's Joker, as his signature
colours and flamboyance seemed to suit the experiment.

This illo was done for a magazine competition in mid 2006. The
competition was 'Anything Anime' so being a big fan of
Koshun Takami's Battle Royale I came up with the idea of a gun
weilding schoolgirl.

Some archived illustrations (pt.1)

Here are a couple of illustrations, grouped together for no better reason than the fact they are both 'landscape' orientation.

This 2005 illo was done to a design brief; it explores crazy Japanese pop culture and
refererences the 'sexualization of the schoolgirl'. This was used as part of a
multimedia A/V display. It was created with a combination of Photoshop, Illustrator,
Poser 5 and Corel Painter 8. All elements in the image were created by me, except
the Plane which was a Stock image.

This illo was a persnal experiment to try and emulate the Frank Miller Sin City high
contrast style, as well as traditional 'pulp comic' art. The brief storyline is
admittedly Kill Bill inspired.

Some "Painting with Light" treatment to my Photography

All images were shot by me between 2005-2007 on a Canon 350D (aka Rebel XT) with 18-55mm lens. All of these have been editied in Photoshop to varying degrees. (All images © Daniel Swine).

This shot was taken in strong daylight, and had very saturated
colours, as tropical fauna usually does. Photoshop was used
extensively to create much more pleasing tonal and contrast
relationships, and a moodier atmosphere.

This shot was taken during a 2006 post-gig 'meet and greet'
session for the Black Metal band Mayhem. The on location
lighting at the session was appaling, so most photo results were
fairly dismal (rather like Mayhem's lyrical content). This shot
was reworked in Photoshop to salvage what was a very bland shot.
Many of the highlights and shadows were manually re-worked
with dodge and burn techniques.

This is a portrait of one of my drinking buddies, taken in a pub
(of course) with out him knowing it. This was re-worked in
Photoshop to experiment with channel details and PDL techniques.

Another good friend of mine in his natural habitat, a tattoo
shop. Shane is a very talented young tattoo artist, so tried to do
him justice in this shot.

Shane again, this time in portrait form. The original shot
wasn't that pleasing as it lacked contrast, however Photoshop
saved the day.
